SUBSTANCE: invention relates to industrial communication systems that use Ethernet-based networks to control time-critical processes in vehicle control systems, drive control systems or sub-station automation systems. The communication network interoperates with multiple synchronised nodes. Normal data blocks, containing time-critical data, are transmitted periodically or cyclically, and sporadic data blocks are transmitted either in irregular or random manner. In particular, each of the multiple nodes transmits normal data block in the beginning of transmission period, which is common for all nodes and synchronised with those. Then each node receives normal data blocks from the first neighbouring node and forwards them to the second neighbouring node within the same transmission interval and with minimum possible delay. Besides, each node actively delays transmission of any sporadic data block irrespectively to that whether it is coming from an application within the node or received from a neighbouring node, until forwarding of all received normal data blocks is complete.

EFFECT: higher accuracy of transmission.
