FIELD: physics, signalling.

SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to signalling systems. The system comprises at least one light-emitting device for showing a signal or warning a viewer, wherein during operation, the light-emitting device is configured to emit radiation with a light distribution forming a solid angle in space, and the centre line of the solid angle is defined as an optical axis (Z) of the light-emitting device. The light-emitting device comprises a transparent housing, a reflector and a light-emitting part located within the housing, wherein the reflector and the light-emitting part are configured to generate radiation with said light distribution. The signalling system further comprises blocking means located substantially at one side of the light-emitting device. The blocking means are configured to individually block, during operation, at least part of the radiation emitted by the light-emitting device in a direction substantially parallel to the optical axis (Z), wherein said one side is defined with respect to an imaginary plane through the optical axis (Z). The invention further relates to different applications of said signalling system. Despite low luminance of the light-emitting device, the invention provides higher contrast in case of a low-angled sun with respect to the optical axis (Z).
