FIELD: physics, computer engineering.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to numerically controlled machine tools. The control and virtual display system for a machine tool comprises a tool holder, a workpiece mandrel, actuating devices, drive means, wherein the system comprises, connected to the machine tool, a numerical controller and a processing system which is configured to generate, during machining and based on target coordinates and mathematical models of the machine tool, workpiece and tool stored in memory, graphic data suitable for reproduction on display means for virtual two-dimensional representations of positions occupied by the workpiece and the machine tool, in a predetermined "predictive time window" and configured to transmit an alarm signal and/or a call to stop operation of the machine tool, if the calculated future positions of the tool might cause collisions.

EFFECT: preliminary investigation, using graphic display, of movements to be made by a machine tool, once the operator issues a command to begin execution of a machine program and displaying movements of coordinate axes of the machine tool at the onset of all changes determined by the operator, and enabling graphical verification thereof before execution on the machine tool, which enables to detect any possible error and ultimately prevent damage to the tool, the workpiece or the machine tool.
