FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: multimode fibre-optic transmission line is probed with short optical pulses of a single-mode optical radiation source. The end of the single-mode source is moved on the end of the multimode optical fibre with a given step along the diameter. The pulse response of the optical fibre of the multimode fibre-optic transmission line is measured and the set of pulse response measurement result is then used to plot a differential modal delay graph, which is compared with a graph of allowable differential modal delay values. If the differential modal delay estimates for the graph plotted based on pulse response measurement results do not exceed corresponding estimates of the graph of allowable differential modal delay values, the multimode optical fibre of the fibre-optic transmission line is selected for operation with a single-mode optical radiation source.
EFFECT: faster and fewer measurements.
