FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: optical probing signal is transmitted to the near end of an optical fibre and the back-scattering signal at the near end of the optical fibre is received and differential modal delay is determined analysis results of the back-scattering signal. The optical probing signal is transmitted to the optical fibre in form of a series of optical pulses. The back-scattering signal at the near end of the optical fibre is transmitted to the input of an optical radiation polarisation analyser. Optical radiation power with a single polarisation is received at the output of the polarisation analyser and the back-scattering characteristic is measured, for whose beats, which are lower than a set level, the multimode optical fibre with high differential modal delay values is identified.
EFFECT: wider field of use of the method.
