SUBSTANCE: invention relates to software installation and updating. An application terminal is turned on and connected to a home gateway; the home gateway automatically sends to the application terminal a request to obtain software, resets a response waiting timer for a response sent by the application terminal; if a response is not received before expiry of the time set by the timer, a software installation request is sent to the application terminal; if a response is received before expiry of the time set by the timer, and the version number contained in the response is older, a software update request is sent to the application terminal; the application terminal performs an operation to install or update software according to the information input by the user. The present invention employs a confidential protocol for transmitting data between a home gateway and an application terminal in a home network for automatic determination of the state of the software on the application terminal; the home gateway transmits, if necessary, data on the software to the application terminal, thereby realising installation or update of the software of the application terminal in the existing home network.
EFFECT: high reliability of installing and updating software of an application terminal in a home network.
