ASSESSMENT METHOD OF PROTECTIVE PROPERTIES OF ARMOUR HELMETS BY DETERMINING RISK OF UNDER-ARMOUR CONTUSION HEAD INJURY Russian patent published in 2015 - IPC F41H1/04 A42B3/00

Abstract RU 2549691 C2

FIELD: weapons and ammunition.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to tests of personal protective equipment of a person, namely to assessment methods of protective properties of armour helmets against action of high-speed striking elements - small arms bullets and fragments formed during explosions of HE ammunition. Besides, the proposed technical solution can be related to special medical equipment. An assessment method of protective properties of armour helmets by determining risk of under-armour contusion head injury consists in action with striking elements of fire arms on an armour helmet put on a dummy head made according to anthropometric parameters of a human head and recording of consequences of action by measurement of dummy deformations. The method differs from the known ones by the fact that there measured is a value of elastic deformation of the dummy base in a direction perpendicular to the base plane, quantitative assessment of risk of under-armour contusion head injury is performed as per risk index Kr according to a chart of Kr dependence on maximum elastic deformation S of the dummy base, and the found quantitative value Kr is used as a parameter characterising protective properties of the armour helmet; with that, at value Kr of less than 0.50 an allowable risk degree is forecasted, and when Kr is equal to and more than 0.50, a high risk degree of occurrence of under-armour contusion head injury is forecasted, with that, material with elasticity modulus of 0.2 to 0.5 GPa is used as material for the dummy head base.

EFFECT: method allows characterising damage to health in a certain and quantitative manner, which is related to occurrence of under-armour contusion injury at penetration of a bullet or a fragment into the armour helmet.
