FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: analysed object is scanned with penetrating radiation, characterised by a certain energy distribution, and penetrating radiation scattered by the analysed object is detected by generating a first detector signal which distinguishes between materials with high and low effective atomic number under a first set of conditions with respect to the energy distribution of the penetrating radiation, and generating a second detector signal which distinguishes between materials with high and low effective atomic number under a second set of conditions with respect to the energy distribution of the penetrating radiation. An image is formed, which is based on the function of the first detector signal and the second detector signal. The first detector signal and the second detector signal are also combined to form a differential image, which enables to distinguish between material with a high Z value and material with a low Z value.

EFFECT: high degree of energy resolution during X-ray radiation backscattering by an object.
