FIELD: transport.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to ship building, namely to a layout and a sealing method of a propeller shaft of a ship. For sealing the propeller shaft of the ship there used is a seal that includes a group of lip sealings that are located in series in the direction of the propeller shaft so that a sealing chamber is formed between adjacent lip sealings. The pressure of the first sealing chamber on the propeller side is closer to the pressure of surrounding water on the propeller shaft level, and the pressure in the second sealing chamber that is located at the maximum distance from the propeller is controlled to a fixed value that is lower than the pressure in the first sealing chamber. The pressure in the third chamber that is located between the first and the second chambers is controlled by means of a pressure control device to a value between the pressure values in the first and the second chambers by controlling the pressure loss that is related to a liquid medium flow.
EFFECT: achieving the maximum service life and an optimum condition for the sealing under varying surrounding operating conditions.
