The method includes: bringing a substantially solvent free water stream into counterflow contact with decarbonised spent gas in the emission control section of the absorption column to extract the solvent from the decarbonised spent gas to form a solvent containing flush water and the recovered solvent containing spent gas; bringing the cooled flush water into counterflow contact with the recovered solvent containing spent gas in the spent gas cooling section of the absorption column to cool the recovered solvent containing spent gas, thereby forming cooled spent gas and the used flush water.
