FIELD: physics, navigation.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to radar and remote probing and can be used to detect extended inhomogeneities in optically opaque media. The result is achieved due to that a probed object is illuminated with electromagnetic radiation, wherein the oscillation plane of the electrical component is periodically turned by 90 degrees. During interaction with the object, the illuminating radiation is scattered and partially depolarised due to reasons associated with the structural inhomogeneity in the object and the peculiarity of its orientation relative to the field. Components that are orthogonally polarised relative to the polarisation of the radiation illuminating the object are successively separated from the depolarised radiation. Said components are converted to electrical signals, the difference between which is determined. The value of said difference is an indicator of the presence or absence of an inhomogeneity in the object.

EFFECT: reduced effect of noise arising from the interference of waves reflected by the object and high signal-to-noise ratio.
