SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of processing coal and obtaining useful products therefrom. A method of processing coal, which contains natural carbon-bearing compounds, includes steps of: bringing the coal into contact with one or more acetates selected from a group consisting of methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, propyl acetate, isopropyl acetate, n-butyl acetate, isobutyl acetate, amyl acetate, isoamyl acetate, hexyl acetate, heptyl acetate, octyl acetate, nonanyl acetate, decyl acetate, undecyl acetate, lauryl acetate, tridecyl acetate, myristyl acetate, pentadecyl acetate, cetyl acetate, heptadecyl acetate, stearyl acetate, behenyl acetate, hexacosyl acetate and triacontyl acetate, thereby solubilising at least part of the carbon-bearing compounds in the coal by converting the carbon-bearing compounds into compounds which dissolve in water by breaking chemical bonds of the carbon-bearing compounds in the coal and/or reaction with carbon-bearing compounds in the coal. A composition for bioconversion is also disclosed.
