FIELD: physics, atomic power.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to operation of travelling-wave reactors. A method of operating a reactor includes a step where the travelling wave burning front propagates along first and second dimensions in multiple fuel subassemblies in the reactor core, and a step where said subassemblies are controllably moved along a first direction, which determines the shape of the burning front. Controlled movement of the subassemblies along the first dimension is carried out radially and helically.
EFFECT: optimising the nuclear fuel burning mode and increasing the burn-out level thereof.
