FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing phenol, acetone and alpha-methylstyrene, which includes the following steps: obtaining a mixture of cumene hydroperoxide and dimethylbenzyl alcohol; subjecting the mixture to a first reaction step in the presence of about 0.5-1.5 wt % water and about 20-400 ppm sulphuric acid at reactor pressure of about 450-760 mmHg, temperature of about 60-85°C and reactor dwell time of 4-45 minutes to obtain a composition in molar ratio of acetone and phenol of about 1-1.5; and subjecting said composition to a second reaction step in the presence of about 0.5-3 wt % additional water at reactor temperature at the second step of about 110-150°C and reactor dwell time of 0.5-30 minutes.
EFFECT: disclosed method enables to obtain alpha-methylstyrene with high output, with optimum output of phenol and acetone, and reduces the amount of by-products.
