FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a cellulose barrier composition for use in barrier materials, particularly food packaging. The composition contains: a) cellulose fibres having a number-average length of 0.001 to 0.5 mm and a specific surface area of 1 to 100 m2/g; b) a partially hydrolysed vinyl acetate polymer, the composition containing 55 to 65 wt % of (a) and 35 to 45 wt % of (b) based on the dry weight of (a) and (b) in the composition. The composition is used to produce self-supporting films or coating layers for providing barriers for permeable substrates.
EFFECT: invention enables to produce barrier materials from renewable sources with improved physical and mechanical properties.
