FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to compositions for reducing the absorption or bioavailability of lipids in the gastrointestinal tract, and to methods for the preparation and use of these compositions. The compositions comprise a source of dietary fibre of plant or non-plant origin together with a cyclodextrin. The fibre preparation is derived from a plant belonging to the genus Opuntia. The non-plant fibre is chitosan. The composition comprising a cyclodextrin selected from the group consisting of alpha-cyclodextrin, beta-cyclodextrin, gamma-cyclodextrin, and combinations of two or more such cyclodextrins. The weight ratio of the dietary fibre and cyclodextrin is between 95:5 and 60:40. A method of reducing weight gain, prevention and treatment of obesity or hyperlipidaemia, comprising the step of administering a composition to a subject in need of such treatment.
EFFECT: invention provides a composition with an increased fat-binding ability.
