FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a method for metathesis of nitrile rubbers in the presence of a special catalyst for metathesis breakdown of nitrile rubber. The method for metathesis of nitrile rubbers is carried out in the presence of at least one catalyst of general formula

where M denotes ruthenium, Y denotes oxygen (O), X1 and X2 denote anionic ligands, R1 denotes a hydrogen atom, C1-C12-alkyl, C2-C12-alkenyl, C2-C12-alkynyl or aryl, R2, R3, R4, R5 are identical or different and each denotes a hydrogen atom, -NO2, C1-C12-alkyl, C1-C12-alkoxy, unsubstituted or substituted with a radical selected from a group consisting of C1-C6-alkyl and C1-C6-alkoxy, phenyl, R6 denotes C1-C12-alkyl, C3-C6-cycloalkyl, C7-C18-arylalkyl or aryl, R7 denotes a hydrogen atom, C1-C12-alkyl, C5-C6-cycloalkyl, aryl or C7-C18-arylalkyl, and L denotes a neutral ligand.
EFFECT: disclosed method enables to perform metathesis breakdown of nitrile rubber without gel formation, and also enables to achieve low molecular weight of broken down nitrile rubber with a comparable noble metal load.
