SUBSTANCE: invention relates to means for automatically switching functions associated with a leading radio station to another radio station on a channel. The method includes receiving (410), from a leading radio station operating on a channel, an associated timing signal via a control timing message. Other radio stations use the timing signal to synchronise transmissions made on the channel. The method also includes receiving (420), by the other radio stations, an indication that the leading radio station can no longer provide control timing messages, maintaining (430), by each radio station on the channel, values for various elements associated with radio stations operating on the channel and selecting (440) a new leading radio station from the other radio stations based on priorities of the various elements.

EFFECT: high reliability of operation of radio stations.
