FIELD: physics, computer engineering.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to computer engineering. The technical result is achieved due to that in a target state, all user sessions maybe closed on a computing device, such that the user state is no longer stored in volatile memory. However, the operating system may still be executing. In response to a command to start-up the computer, the target state may be quickly re-established from the recorded target state information. Portions of a start-up sequence may be performed to complete the start-up process, including establishing user state.
EFFECT: enabling a computer to be quickly ready for operation in a state which matches user expectation by copying contents of volatile memory into different non-volatile memory, wherein the copied contents include stored system state but not the user state which is no longer stored.
