SUBSTANCE: method includes determining information for transmission to a user; formatting the information for presentation on a tactile output surface to generate formatted information indicative of relative magnitude information; and activating a localised portion of a tactile output surface to generate a haptic activation area corresponding to the formatted information. The haptic activation area provides a tactile sensation to a user touching the tactile output surface, and the relative size of the haptic activation area in comparison to the size of the tactile output surface indicates the relative magnitude information.
EFFECT: enabling presentation of information to a user without the need to generate audio and visual output.
