SUBSTANCE: invention provides a method and an apparatus for transmitting machine type communication (MTC) data over an Iu interface in a universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS). In one embodiment, aggregating packet data units (PDU) associated with one or more MTC devices are aggregated by a radio network controller. The aggregated PDU associated with the one or more MTC devices are then concatenated into an Iu PDU based on a radio access bearer (RAB) identifier associated with the one or more MTC devices. The Iu PDU including the aggregated PDU is transmitted to a core network over an Iu-PS interface which connects the radio network controller and the core network.
EFFECT: high UMTS throughput.
