SUBSTANCE: invention relates to transmission of data with a switched data rate. A method of transmitting data over a network and a device for transmitting data over a network comprise two data processing devices which are network subscribers and communicate data frames over the network, having a logic structure; bit length within a data frame may assume at least two different values; for a first given region within a data frame, bit length is greater than or equal to a given maximum value, and in at least a second given region within the data frame, the bit length is not greater than half, preferably less than half the bit length in the first region, and variation of the bit length is realised using two different scaling factors for establishing a bus time unit relative to the least time unit or to a reference oscillator cycle.
EFFECT: high bit rate of transmitting large amounts of data over a network while maintaining error detection and handling properties.
