FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: method of producing biofuel, which includes treating an organic substance with an aqueous solvent and at least one additional catalyst selected from a group consisting of: an acid catalyst, a steam conversion catalyst, an aluminosilicate-based catalyst, a sulphide catalyst and a base catalyst, where the organic substance and aqueous solvent are provided in the form of a suspension, and said treatment is carried out in continuous flow conditions with minimal, volume-independent suspension flow rate which is greater than the settling rate of solid substance in the suspension, wherein said treatment includes: heating and raising pressure to a target temperature between about 250°C and about 400°C and to a target pressure between about 100 bar to about 300 bar to obtain biofuel; treating at the target temperature and target pressure for a defined period of time; cooling and lowering pressure in the suspension, and wherein said at least one additional catalyst is added to the organic substance after heating to said temperature and after raising pressure to said level, but before lowering pressure in the suspension; the biofuel is bio-oil and said organic substance is coal or a wood-fibre substance.
