FIELD: electrical engineering.
SUBSTANCE: voltage is fed in between the electrodes spaced apart through a fixed distance to make induced current melt and evaporate a thin metal wire. The latter is arranged in the electrode gap at such distance whereat the discharge cannot occur spontaneously without the wire while conditions for the avalanche breakdown of the discharge gap are developed. Note here that the discharge channel is arranged in the magnetic field perpendicular thereto, the field direction increasing the charged particles escape from the discharge gap to decrease the heating of electrodes required for their evaporation which is required for the self-maintained arc discharge.
EFFECT: prevention of the self-maintained arc discharge and killing of the glow discharge.
