FIELD: physics; measurement technology.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of investigation of the physical properties of matter, in particular to the investigation of processes in plasma and in gas discharge devices, between which anode and cathode are supplied at a fixed distance between them. Method for preventing the formation of a thermal cumulative channel on the metal surface of a cathode and fixing the position of the discharge channel at the cathode, in a non-self-sustaining arc discharge when an electrode placed between the electrodes is blown, electrodes – cathode in the form of a plate and the anode are placed at a fixed distance from each other, a dielectric plate with a circular aperture not more than 1 cm in diameter is placed on the cathode surface, allowing the wire placed between the electrodes with the cathode surface to touch through the hole in its geometric center, supply voltage to the electrodes providing an avalanche breakdown of the discharge gap arising in the presence of vapors of evaporating wire in air, the discharge current is changed from 50 to 100 A due to the use of the variable resistance, resulting in a volumetric space charge formed by excess electrons on the surface of the cathode in the region of the opening of the dielectric plate, and fix position of the discharge channel on the surface of the cathode in a zone limited by the hole diameter in the dielectric plate.
EFFECT: providing the possibility of forming a space charge with a non-self-sustaining arc discharge.
