SUBSTANCE: method for retrieving key frame indices from a video sequence, which comprises calculating values of source data on transition complexity, which measure the quantitative value of change of scene between consecutive frames for all pairs of consecutive frames of the video sequence; performing an optimisation procedure, which includes searching for a set of key frames, which minimises the sum of the overall transition complexity between neighbouring key frames of the set and the cost function for the set of key frames, wherein the transition complexity between two key frames is a function of values of initial data on transition complexity among all pairs of consecutive frames, which are key frames or are located between said key frames; and retrieving key frame indices for the set of key frames detected as a result of said search.

EFFECT: enabling automatic selection of key frames for video data extension.
