SUBSTANCE: invention relates to video encoding and compression, particularly to methods of providing re-sampling of reference frames using switchable filters. Disclosed is a technology for encoding and decoding video using re-sampling of reference frames using switchable filters. One example involves obtaining a current frame and a reference frame, identifying filter index information for the current block of the current frame and determining that the first frame size value for the current frame and the second frame size value for the reference frame differ. Based on the determination that the first frame size value for the current frame and the second frame size value for the reference frame differ, performing a resampling process using a default filter index instead of the current filter index identified by the filter index information. Further examples may use the current filter index identified by the filter index information in subsequent blocks, wherein the current filter index may be retrieved or reported.
