SUBSTANCE: invention relates to railway transport, in particular to a system of identification numbers of freight wagons in marshalling yards. Method for identification of number of freight wagon includes installation on passive coding unit carriage, activating it during movement, issuance of an excited response code encoding device and reading last message. Activation is carried out by shoring electric circuit, formed by series connection of an encoder train of conductive elements of rail and load impedance to power source.
