SUBSTANCE: method of determining the forward and reverse available link bandwidth of a route from one endpoint includes the following steps: transmitting from source endpoint node towards a destination endpoint node a forward series of packets which includes the first plurality of test packets through a forward route and receiving, at the source endpoint node, a corresponding reverse series of packets from the destination endpoint node, wherein the reverse series of packets includes the second plurality of test packets, through a reverse route, each matching the corresponding packet from the first plurality of test packets.
