FIELD: metalworking.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for producing a multilayer coating on cutting tool and can be used in metal working. Vacuum plasma sandwiched coating is applied. First, a lower layer of titanium nitride is applied. Method then includes applying a top layer of a nitride compound of titanium, silicon and zirconium in following ratio, wt%: 83.15-87.35 titanium, zirconium 12.0-16.0, silicon 0.65-0.85. Coating plies are applied by three cathodes arranged horizontally in one plane. First cathode consists of titanium and zirconium. Second cathode is made of titanium and is placed opposite first, and third electrode is made of titanium and a silicon alloy and is placed in between. Bottom layer is applied with help of second cathode while top layer is applied by first and third cathodes.
EFFECT: obtaining a wear-resistant coating with high strength characteristics, resulting in improved operability of cutting tool.
