FIELD: technological processes.
SUBSTANCE: invention consists in determination of the grain mean diameter DG of metal performed using a calibration curve of the ratio U′ of structural noise USN value to Rayleigh wave UR pulse, described by the linear relationship DG=a+b·U′, where a and b - structural coefficients. Device for determining the average grain diameter of metal articles is additionally preliminary calibrated by performing tests of n samples, computing n values of the ratio U′ and measuring by means of metallographic light microscope n corresponding values of average grain diameter DG of test specimens.
EFFECT: possibility of high accuracy while determining the average grain diameter of metal articles.
