FIELD: information technology.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to means of configuration of space element of medium access control (MAC) in service virtual private LAN (VPLS). When an edge device (UPE) close to a service provider network at user side receives a message from network side, performing an operation of not learning MAC information of message at network side in a VPLS MAC table on UPE. When UPE receives a message from user side, performing an operation of learning MAC information of message at user side in VPLS MAC table on UPE, wherein side of UPE connected to a network device is network side, and side of UPE connected to a user device is user side. When UPE receives a message on side of user, UPE directly sends a message on side of user on a network device on network side, connected with UPE.

EFFECT: present invention solves technical problem of degradation of processing performance caused by running out of the VPLS MAC entry space in UPE device, improving forwarding performance of the UPE.
