SUBSTANCE: invention relates to processing digital images. Proposed is a method of enhancing digital raster images by local leveling brightness. Method includes the stage of dividing an image into areas representing groups of pixels. Herewith for each area the primary histogram of brightness distribution is determined independently. Further, according to the method, the global histogram of the entire image brightness distribution is calculated. Herewith for each image area an expanded local histogram is synthesized, in which to each value of brightness corresponds the total number of pixels of the given brightness of the primary histogram, the number of pixels of the given brightness of the areas histograms bordering with the current one, and the number of pixels of the given brightness of the global histogram taken with generally different weight coefficients.

EFFECT: technical result is improved quality of transformed images due to the use of wider local histogram of brightness distribution.
