FIELD: electronics.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to classification of electronic messages. Method of detecting spam includes following steps: using at least one computer system processor to obtain a target string, which forms part of an electronic message; use of at least one processor to convert target line in a target signal, containing a sequence of numbers, wherein each character of target string is converted into a number of said sequence of numbers; in response to obtaining a target string - using at least one processor for determining string eligibility criterion according to target string; using at least one processor to pre-filter a corpus of reference strings according to string eligibility criterion, to produce a plurality of candidate strings; in response to selecting candidate strings, employing at least one processor perform a comparison between a frequency spectrum of target signal and a frequency spectrum determined for a candidate string of plurality of candidate strings, wherein determination of frequency spectrum of target signal comprises a representation of target signal in form of a group of frequency components of target signal, each frequency component has a separate frequency and amplitude, defined for said separate frequency; and using at least one processor to determine based on results of said comparison, whether or not electronic message is spam.
