SUBSTANCE: invention relates to cellular communications. Disclosed are systems and methods for triggering a long range extension mode of operation for a wireless device in a cellular communications network. In one preferred embodiment, wireless device is a machine type communication (MTC) device. In one embodiment, a node in a cellular communications network determines that wireless device is to operate in long range extension mode, if there is difficulty in establishing communication between wireless device and cellular communications network. If wireless device is to operate in long range extension mode, node activates one or more long range extension mechanisms with respect to wireless device such that wireless device operates in long range extension mode.

EFFECT: in this manner, long range extension mode is selectively triggered for wireless device.
