SUBSTANCE: banknotes stored in the temporary storage section (22) are issued based on the results of differentiation performed by the differentiating section (21) at the preceding stage, where the banknotes are stored in the temporary storage section (22). It is determined whether the banknotes stored in the temporary storage section (22) are the normal banknotes or the banknotes to be stored separately from the normal banknotes, respectively. The banknotes differentiated as the banknotes to be stored separately from the normal banknotes are transferred and stored directly from the temporary storage section (22) into the container (23) for rejected banknotes, without passing through the differentiating section (21). Thus, compared with the case of transferring the banknotes by the route necessarily passing through the differentiating section, it becomes possible to reduce the transmission distance from the temporary storage section (22) to the storage area, which can reduce the occurrence frequency of the failures due to the banknotes to be stored separately from normal banknotes.
