SUBSTANCE: banknote handling device includes the multiple release ports (2a, 2b) which release banknotes; the banknote classification section (4) which classifies the banknotes; the temporary retention section (3) which separates and packs the banknotes; the controller (11) which performs control in order to select the destination of the banknotes classified by the banknote classification section from the multiple release ports and the temporary retention section, and performs control in order to transfer the banknotes to the selected release port or temporary retention section. Once the banknotes transferred to the selected release port are extracted, the banknotes transferred to the temporary retention section are transferred to the release port from which the banknotes were extracted.
