SUBSTANCE: banknote handling device includes a release port (2) which releases banknotes, a banknote (4) identification section which identifies if banknotes meet the standard, a storage (9) only section which stores banknotes identified by the identification section as deviating from the standard, one or more banknote (6A-6E) storage sections, a temporary retention (3) section for temporary storage of banknotes, a control section for controlling transportation of banknotes. A first banknote transportation route (L) is executed between the banknote identification section and the storage only section; the release port is situated on the first route. A second banknote transportation route (M) is executed between the banknote identification section and the storage only section; one or more banknote storage sections are situated on the second route.

EFFECT: providing a banknote screening route which does not overlap with the banknote transportation route from the banknote storage section to the banknote identification section.
