FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: backlight device is configured to switch between the 3D display and the 2D display mode, comprises a light guide plate. The light guide plate comprises a substrate configured to spread the first light beam and the second light beam inside it due to total internal reflection. The first beam is introduced from one of the front surface and the rear surface of the substrate, when the 3D display mode is used, and the second beam is introduced from, at least, one of the side surfaces of the substrate, when the 2D display mode is used, the first and the second light beams have different angular distributions. The substrate also comprises a prismatic structure on an upper substrate surface and consisting of a series of the spaced prisms. The bottom substrate surface has an array of the linear grooves or protrusions.
EFFECT: reducing the total backlight device thickness, providing a simple switch between the 3D and the 2D display modes, and eliminating the shadow effect in the 3D display mode.
