SUBSTANCE: invention relates to encoding of digital multimedia data with conversion. The proposed digital multimedia encoder / decoder uses a flexible quantization method, that provides the ability to change the quantization on the various dimensions of the encoded digital multimedia data, containing 3-D channels, the frequency sub-band channels and color channels. Codec effectively uses the signaling scheme for signaling of different combinations exchanges of flexible quantization for the initial usage scenarios. When the selection of the quantizer is available, the codec encodes the current quantizer effectively, by defining a subset of quantizers and indexes the current quantizer from the set.

EFFECT: invention provides a flexible quantization on various dimensions of encoded digital multimedia data.
