FIELD: information technologies.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to method, system and device for digital video signal encoding and more specifically, to encoding quantised conversion factors generated as a result of coding on the basis of block conversion in coder/decoder for videodata and images using variable length coding (VLC). Method for coding a data character set containing certain first number of data characters having the first value and certain second number of data characters having values other than the above said first number. Herewith, character set to be subjected to VLC is subjected to VLC is generated from the mentioned data character set, and VLC is applied to the said character set to implement VLC. In this process at least one VLC parametre applied to character set subject to VLC is adapted in accordance with number of characters subject to VLC, and indication of character number coded using VLC method is provided. In this process the said indication is code word of variable length representing number of characters subject to VLC and selected from at least two alternative sets of variable length code words according to number of characters subject to VLC.

EFFECT: providing proper coding for digital video signal.
