FIELD: agriculture.
SUBSTANCE: method includes determining the dark respiration of morphological organs during the growing period by means of a gas analyzer in Karelian birch and silver birch plants, followed by the comparative analysis. The dark respiration is determined during the period of active cambial growth. As the morphological organ to be studied, trunks or branches of the 1st order are used. The plants of Karelian birch, in which the value of dark respiration exceeds the respiration value of the silver birch plants by 30 and more percent, are attributed as Karelian birch plants with the potential capability to form figured wood.
EFFECT: method allows to increase the accuracy of detecting the Karelian birch seedlings with the potential capability to form figured wood at early stages of growth until the appearance of external veining signs.
