FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a process of chemical processing of technical polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), involving the interaction of PCBs with methoxide-free methanol (MeONa), in a dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) medium with a PCB: MeONa molar ratio of 1:5, at a volume ratio of a MeOH:DMSO residue of 1:5, a temperature of 114-115°C for 8 hours. As starting materials, sodium metal and an excess of methanol are used, after the MeONa formation, excess MeOH is removed and DMSO is added.
EFFECT: complete conversion of the starting polychlorinated biphenyls without the formation of potentially toxic derivatives, among which the amount of hydroxy- and hydroxymethoxy derivatives is more than 78 percent, which indicates a high hydrophilization of the entire mixture of products, the resulting chemical compounds are available for bacterial strains living in aquatic environments and capable of completely mineralizing the resulting polychlorinated biphenyl derivatives.
