SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a internal combustion engine with liquid cooling comprising a cylinder head, a refrigerant circuit for liquid cooling providing, comprising a cooling ribs integrated in the cylinder head, a pressure line for supplying a coolant to the cooling ribs, an outlet for discharging the refrigerant and a return line that is branched off from the discharge line and is open to the pressure line, and a refrigerant pump (1) provided in the refrigerant circuit for refrigerant supply the drive of which contains a liquid frictional clutch (1a) controlling the power of the refrigerant pump (1), the liquid friction clutch (1a) comprises a storage chamber (3) for storing the frictional fluid and a shear chamber (4) which is separated from the storage chamber (3) by means of a wall and in which, by means of a frictional fluid, the torque can be transmitted from the pump input component (6b) to the pump output component (6a), which is mechanically coupled to the pump (1) supply device (8), the storage chamber (3) and the shift chamber (4) can be connected together or separated from each other by a connecting channel (12). An internal combustion engine is proposed in which the amount of refrigerant supplied by the refrigerant pump can vary to a greater or lesser extent. This is achieved by an internal combustion engine which is provided with an additional pump (9) for supplying a frictional fluid by means of which the frictional fluid can be actively supplied between the storage chamber (3) and the shear chamber (4).
