FIELD: transportation.

SUBSTANCE: method includes using a wheel sensor and determining the wheel speed, wherein the wheel passage detection sensor comprises at least one detection zone. A preliminary approximating function is determined, and a set of values of a characterizing parameter or a group of characterizing parameters of the approximating function is entered. When the wheel passes through the detection zone, the response value of the detection zone is recorded in real-time in the sensor memory. Taking into account the determined actual speed, the response function is transformed to the form of the normalized static characteristic, and the value of the characterizing parameter or the value of a group of characterizing parameters of the approximating function is determined, under which the transformed response function with given accuracy corresponds to the approximating function. The diameter of the railway vehicle wheel is determined according to the correspondence table.

EFFECT: increase the accuracy when determining the wheel diameter of the railway vehicle.
