SUBSTANCE: system for changing the configuration comprises of: a housing, containing a downhole tool or a wireline tool and configured to store a syntactic parsing command file and a binary configuration file; and a surface computer, configured to parse the binary configuration file in accordance with the syntactic parsing command file to determine the configuration information, associated with the binary configuration file, to display at least some configuration information as a part of the graphical user interface (GUI); to accept selection of at least some configuration information and corresponding modified values. The selection forms a subset of configuration information, converts the binary configuration file to a converted version of the binary configuration file to replace the values from the selection with the modified values, and sends the converted version of the binary configuration file to the housing as a replacement for the binary configuration file. The converted version of the binary configuration file is intended for configuring the operation of a downhole tool or a wireline tool. The syntactic parsing command file contains information about the display format, and, according to the specified display format information contained in the syntactic parsing command file, a GUI is built.
