FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: method for detecting periodically repeating textures comprises the step of pre-processing the image, which includes: detecting regions of constant brightness; detection of low-information areas, namely regions with a smooth brightness variation; trend compensation and image acquisition with a remote trend; removing identified areas with constant brightness and low-information areas for obtaining image blocks potentially containing periodically repeating textures; and a step of detecting periodically repeating textures in image blocks potentially containing periodically repeating textures, including: normalization of image blocks, the calculation of the power spectrum, the analysis of the properties of local maxima of the power spectrum, the determination of the presence of periodically repeating or quasiperiodic textures, the estimation of the number of directions along which the texture repeats, the evaluation of their orientation and the direction periods for regions in which periodically or quasi-periodic textures are found.
