According to the method, periodically after carrying out the charge or before the planned discharge of the storage battery, the self-discharge rate of the battery with the minimum current voltage and the maximum time until the battery reaches a critical reduction of the current capacity is calculated, and the balancing is carried out no later than the calculated time.
