SUBSTANCE: to identify the subtype of emphysema, voxels of 3D image data corresponding to bullous emphysema are identified. An image of the 2D projection of bullous emphysema, based on voxels corresponding to bullous emphysema, is formed, including the local voxel intensity and the size of bullas. In this case, the intensity of the bulla contour in the image of 2D projection of bullous emphysema is based on the size of the bulla. Bullous emphysema is defined in the image of 2D projection of bullous emphysema using the first indication. Voxels of said 3D image data corresponding to diffuse emphysema are identified. An image of a 2D projection of diffuse emphysema based on voxels corresponding to diffuse emphysema is formed. Diffuse emphysema is defined in the image of 2D projection of diffuse emphysema using the second indication. Image of 2D projection of diffuse emphysema and the image of 2D projection of bullous emphysema are combined, forming a single composite image of 2D projection.
