SUBSTANCE: encoder (1201) comprises a selector (1303) that selects a subset of the time-frequency segments that should be subject to downmixing, and a subset of the segments that must be without downmixing. Generated specifying down mixing, indicating whether the segments are encoded as flattened coded segments or segments without down-mixing. A coded signal containing encoded segments and an indication of downmix is applied to a decoder (1203), which includes a receiver (1401) for receiving the signal. The generator (1403) generates the output signals from the encoded time-frequency segments, the generation of the output signals including up-mix for the segments indicated by the indication of the down-mix as encoded by the down-mix segments.
EFFECT: providing improved scalability, especially at higher data rates.
